Northern Virginia Spend Map

The world's largest data-center market, read through the national spend map. Here the question isn't whether the money lands. It's which parts of an installed base this large still leave room for a small operator.

How the categories change here

Each category from the national map, with its national read and how it shifts in Northern Virginia. Rows marked "inference" are reasoning from the evidence above, not reported facts, and are exactly what the questions below should test.

CategoryNational readHereWhy
Generator testing, load bank & fuelTop candidateStrongerLargest permitted fleet in the largest market. Run-hour logs and six-month DEQ reports add documentation work to every test.
Generator emissions compliance (new row)Not on the national mapNew hereTier 4 presumption for new permits since July 2026 means SCR, particulate filters and emissions monitors to maintain and report on.4 Closest local fit to a controls and documentation background.
UPS battery testing & replacementThe lithium gap is the openingStrongerThe oldest large installed base should carry the most lead-acid strings on 3–5 year replacement cycles (inference).
IT asset disposition & GPU remarketingResearch nextStrongerOldest base, so the most hardware reaching refresh (inference).
Critical-environment cleaningCheapest to test, cheapest to copyStrongerHighest density of data halls; new outer-county builds still need pre-handover cleans (inference).
Mission-critical laborTraining is the version that adds supplyStrongerA DC-area electricians' union doubled its membership to 14,700 between 2018 and January 2026 (recruiter-reported).10
Fire suppression ITMPE has already found itSameDensity draws the roll-ups here first; expect more crowding, not less (inference).
Facility operations (FM)Sell to the majorsSameThe FM majors are concentrated here, so the subcontract route matters most.
Transformer & switchgear remanStrongest supply playSameOuter-county builds and grid upgrades still need gear. The $1.5M/MW collateral rule may thin speculative projects from 2027.9
Liquid-cooling fluid & CDU serviceMost AI-leveragedModerateNew AI halls are going up mostly in the outer counties and in other markets (inference).

For people who live and work in Northern Virginia

Six questions only a local can answer

Answer as many as you like, by text or email to Patrick or through patrick@workbypk.com. Short answers are fine. "I don't know" is useful too. Anything you share is kept anonymous.

  1. Generator service. Who services data-center generators near you: OEM dealers, independents, or the operators' own staff? Is anyone known for doing it badly?
  2. Emissions work. Since the Tier 4 rule, who installs and maintains the catalytic reduction and emissions monitors, and who writes the DEQ reports?
  3. Routine vendors. When a facility needs UPS batteries swapped or a hall cleaned, who gets the call? Is it bid out, or always the same vendor?
  4. Outer counties. Are Culpeper, Fauquier, Stafford and Spotsylvania served by Loudoun-area firms driving out, or by local ones?
  5. Other backup-power customers. Outside data centers, who else runs large generator fleets nearby: federal sites, hospitals, others?
  6. Owners. If you wanted to buy or partner with a small generator, electrical or battery service firm here, who would you call first?
